Julia Charles Designer/Maker

My design development process is tactile, tangible, visual and practical, from concept to realisation. My influences range from Japanese architecture, to Scandinavian furniture design to plant biology. The work of designers such as Sori Yanagi, Charles and Ray Eames and Hans Wegner together with many other great modernist designers provides enormous inspiration.

The evolution of a new design emerges from drawing, model making, exploring materials and testing processes. These processes are useful in refining proportions, creating logical relationships and clean, simple lines.

I strive for qualities of unself-consciousness and utilitarian purpose rather than ladening my work with unnecessary adornment. Environmental awareness underpins each project. Designing for longevity depends on the use of quality sustainable materials and manufacturing processes. I aim to create objects with a sense of timelessness.
