Paul Nicholson
Contemporary furniture, traditionally constructed
My design approach is, like other members of Splinter Workshop,
essentially modernist. I try to optimise form and proportion in
order to achieve my aesthetic goal.
Embellishment is subtle or non existent and its use is always
accompanied by a functional or at least logical influence. My aesthetic
sense is, to some extent, always controlled by my analytical nature.
In contrast, my approach to the making of furniture is traditional.
I enjoy the process of making as much as designing. A key feature
of my work is a strong reliance on traditional methods of joinery.
I believe that the strength of a joint should be a product of its
design and execution, not of the adhesive.
One day I will design a piece that is beautiful, functional, unique
and original in every way. Then I will make it, as I make all my
pieces, with pride and uncompromising attention to detail.
